White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt delivered a blistering takedown of the Democratic Party’s sudden opposition to President Donald Trump’s bold new tariffs, exposing their staggering hypocrisy by throwing their own past statements back in their faces. As the Trump administration enforces 104% tariffs on China and reciprocal tariffs on other unfair trade partners, the liberal media and their Democrat allies are in full meltdown mode—despite having demanded the exact same policies for decades.
Leavitt didn’t hold back during Tuesday’s press briefing, calling out the left’s flip-flopping on trade and reminding Americans that Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and other Democrats once railed against China’s exploitation of the U.S. economy.
“Everybody in Washington, whether they want to admit it or not, knows that this President is right when it comes to tariffs and when it comes to trade,” Leavitt declared. “In fact, Democrats have long said that the United States of America has been ripped off by the countries around the world. They just don’t want to admit it now.”
She then played the ultimate trump card—Nancy Pelosi’s own 1996 House floor speech, where the then-Congresswoman passionately demanded reciprocal tariffs against China:
“How far does China have to go? How much more oppression, how big a trade deficit, how many jobs have to be lost for the American workers? How much dangerous proliferation has to exist before members of this House of Representatives will say, ‘I will not endorse the status quo?’”
Yet today, Pelosi shamelessly claims that Trump’s tariffs will “cause chaos” and hurt American families—a blatant lie from a politician who once begged for the very policies Trump is now implementing.
Leavitt also highlighted Chuck Schumer’s 2007 statement, where he whined about America’s trade deficit, demanding action:
“These are the kinds of records the American people don’t want us to be breaking. The administration needs to move beyond words, take action now to reverse a trend that threatens our prospects for future economic growth.”
Now, Schumer and his allies are suddenly against tough trade policies—because Trump is the one enforcing them.
Even former Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, admitted in 2012 that the U.S. trade deficit with China had “cost American workers millions of jobs.” But now, the left would rather side with Beijing than admit Trump is fixing the mess they ignored for decades.
The liberal media, of course, is complicit in this deception. Instead of applauding Trump for finally standing up to China, outlets like CNN and MSNBC are parroting Democrat talking points, pretending tariffs are a “tax hike” rather than a long-overdue defense of American workers.
But the American people aren’t fooled. They know Trump is the first president in generations with the courage to put America first, reversing decades of weak-kneed globalist policies that shipped jobs overseas. While Democrats and their media allies fear-monger, Trump is delivering on his promise to Make America Wealthy Again.
